Catalyst by Southern Research is a statewide program that is working to redefine research through offering participants free clinical genetic testing directly to their homes.

Our mission is to deliver precision medicine access to Alabamians while seeking to increase clinical trial enrollment and beneﬁt overall community health.

We envision a future where all communities have access to cutting-edge medical tests like genetic testing—so that everyone can benefit from personalized, preventative healthcare.

It’s a movement to close health gaps, increase representation in research, and empower participants and providers with information that can lead to better outcomes while also informing the future of drug discovery.

Why Catalyst Matters

Alabama ranks among the highest in the nation for chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer—yet many residents lack access to screening tools and care. We launched Catalyst to change that.

Catalyst brings free, actionable genetic testing directly to Alabama residents at their home.

Patients receive clinical reports they can share with their doctors that may help them receive more personalized care from their provider.

Participants also contribute to research, helping ensure future discoveries reflect Alabama’s population.

Who We Are

Catalyst is led by Southern Research, a non-profit research institute based in Birmingham, Alabama, with more than 80 years of experience advancing science and improving lives. We work in partnership with primary care clinics, genetic counselors, state leaders, and national experts in precision medicine.
